Greenlaning Locally 19/07/17

A “Wednesday Wander”….

Wednesday the 19th of July. Alan and I had been on the “Scenic Group”‘s weekend to the Lake District at the beginning of July, and are scheduled to go on the “Tight & Scratchy” weekend with some of the other members of “our little group” at the end of July… But Brett, our usual leader and route plotter hadn’t been out since the 4th of June when we’d driven from Oldham to Holmfirth, and he’d had a Kaiser rear locker fitted and wanted to give it a test-run before the second Lake District weekend trip… So, we decided to go on a Wednesday Wander… Wednesday is my day-off in the week, so at 9am when my wife and our member of staff for the day Alex were settled in the shop, Alan and I sloped off…
…. to meet Brett –
DSCN5811
At “Billy Jean’s Cafe” just off the A55 North Wales coastal expressway just east of Pentre Halkyn. (Note the new JimnyBits bolt-on sill bars!)
DSCN5810.JPG
The Jalapeno’s had a lick of paint too? 😉
DSCN5812.JPG
Inside, for breakfast…
And a discussion of the route –
route190717.jpg
… that Alan had plotted, and I had copied from his paper maps onto the Memory Map software we use to share and follow routes. Alan had also liaised with Denbighshire and Flintshire’s Rights-of-Way officers to check the new ‘lanes we were going to drive, and had the nod on them all…

Brett’s now customary Introductory Video 😉
The first was a little used yellow road that goes over a bridge over the A55 –
mapremovedAt the beginning of the ‘lane, Alan had seen (in April) my favourite blue sign “Unsuitable for Motors”, but today…
DSCN5813.JPG
… it wasn’t very visible! LOL
DSCN5814.JPGUp the yellow…
DSCN5815.JPG
And over the single lane bridge, which seemed to have been built to allow access to one house when the A55 was originally built?!
DSCN5816.JPG
Looking west down the A55 to the Burger King on the brow of the hill… I’ve driven under this bridge hundreds of times and often wondered where it went… nowhere much! 😉

Brett’s YouTube Video of this first ‘lane, including us hunting for the sign… LOL 😉

We then loop back towards the Burger King and the ‘motel’ on the map above, but then swing east again and down the white UCR (Unclassified County Road) with ORPA (Other Route with Public Access) dots.
DSCN5818.JPG
It started off looking like an uninteresting “3-ply” road…
DSCN5819.JPG
But soon got ‘greener’…
DSCN5820
A nice find Alan! 🙂
DSCN5821.JPG
Looking back at Brett behind us…
DSCN5822.JPG
“Wat’s Dyke Way” ByWay sign pointing back from whence we came…
DSCN5823.JPG
To the end where we rejoin the tarmac…

Brett’s YouTube Video of this smashing find.
Next… a Ford in Northop we went to have a look at after seeing it on the “WetRoads” website –
DSCN5825.JPG
More of an open culvert!
DSCN5826.JPG
Just enough to wet the tyres!
DSCN5827.JPG
A bit damaging in a ‘normal car’ though!
Next!…
mapremoved
A white UCR / with ORPA dots road west of Mold…
DSCN5830.JPGFlat… but on the way! 😉

Brett’s YouTube Video of it.
DSCN5832.JPG
Next… another Ford –
DSCN5833.JPG
Hmmm… we could do with some more rain?! But it’s mid-July? Ummm, thunderstorms were forecast for the middle of the afternoon though?!
mapremoved
Next… “Fron” to Nercwys, another UCR with ORPA dots, might be tarmac, but worth a look?…
DSCN5837.JPG
It started off looking mild…
DSCN5838.JPG
And then got greener…
DSCN5839.JPG
And then more over-grown!…
DSCN5840.JPG
And then things got darker as we entered a tunnel of trees…
DSCN5841.JPG
Oooh, nice find Alan! 😉
He’d found this and some of the others watching some TRF (Trail Rider’s Fellowship – Motorbike) Video on YouTube and then working out where they were from Streetview, etc, before checking the routes with the Rights of Way officers..
DSCN5842.JPG
DSCN5843.JPG
Dropping down… before…
DSCN5844.JPG
…carefully passing a house.
DSCN5845.JPG
And then emerging out and back to tarmac…
https://youtu.be/hp_BiOy67UM
Brett’s YouTube Video of this great ‘lane.
mapremoved
Next… just ORPA dots
DSCN5848.JPG
DSCN5849.JPG
DSCN5850.JPG
DSCN5851.JPG
DSCN5852.JPG
A great ‘lane! Heading back to tarmac again…

Brett’s YouTube Video of it 😉
mapremoved
Next… BOAT (ByWay Open to All Traffic) heading south
DSCN5854.JPG
ByWay sign
DSCN5855.JPG
Heading off the tarmac…
DSCN5856.JPG
I remember this being graded some years ago 😦

Brett’s YouTube Video of the first half of it, up to where we stopped for a pits stop (I might have mis-spelt that!)

And the second half 😉
mapremoved
After that, heading west over another BOAT…
DSCN5858.JPG
Another ByWay sign…

Brett’s YouTube Video of the ‘lane… seems I didn’t take any decent photos of it…
mapremoved
Then heading south-east over the ORPA dot route above…
DSCN5864.JPG
DSCN5865.JPG
Again, I remember this being graded years ago, but still a nice drive!

Brett’s YouTube Video of it 😉
DSCN5866.JPG
Tight left here, off a main road…
DSCN5878.JPG
And down a tight ‘lane…
DSCN5868.JPG
To another empty little Ford…
DSCN5869.JPG
Brett behind us… I’ve never seen this little Ford so low! 😦
DSCN5870.JPG
And then up the undergrowth on the other side…

Brett’s You Tube Video of this nice little Ford.
DSCN5871.JPG
Blimey! That’s a BIG one! Another blue sign for the collection 😉
DSCN5872.JPG
Now there’s a view for you! Dropping down into the Clwyd valley… home sweet home 😉
DSCN5873.JPG
Dodging a group of elderly ramblers coming the other way…
DSCN5874.JPG
The cows are all lying down? That rain must be coming?…
DSCN5875.JPG
Towards the end of the ‘lane…
mapremoved
Next ‘lane, heading north out of Pwll-glas to Efenechtyd to drop south-west down that ‘lane on the left of the iPad screen… Another new one? 🙂
DSCN5877.JPG
At the start…
DSCN5878.JPG
Nice!
DSCN5879.JPG
Hmmm… at this point we get out and have a walk…

Brett’s YouTube Video up to where we stop and he suggests having a walk…
DSCN5880.JPG
Maps out! And we double-double check we’re in the right place… We’ve had the nod from the council on this one as a new one too…
DSCN5881.JPG
So, we leant on the gate and had a natter for ten minutes… 😉
Before…
DSCN5882.JPG
Deciding to go for it! It looked tight, there’s was a track down the middle that the motorbikes use, but it looked wide enough for a small 4×4 like a Jimny, and was a UCR with ORPA dots, and we’d had the nod from the Rights f Way officers… What the hell… 😉
DSCN5883.JPG
Not too bad (see Brett’s video below too) and it soon levelled out into a diff polisher!

DSCN5884.JPG
And then wild again!
mapremoved
Getting there…
DSCN5887.JPG
DSCN5888.JPG
DSCN5889.JPG
Out at the farm at the end… Phew! 😉

Brett’s YouTube Video of Alan’s excellent new find 🙂
mapremoved
Next – Pen-y-maes to Clocaenog…
DSCN5891.JPG
Off the tarmac and straight ahead…
DSCN5892.JPG
And then off the track and onto the ‘lane proper…
DSCN5893.JPG
And then down an avenue of trees…
DSCN5894.JPG
DSCN5895.JPG
DSCN5896.JPG
I remarked to Alan somewhere round here that Wednesday Wanders are not supposed to out-do our usual Sunday trips! 😉
DSCN5897.JPG
DSCN5898.JPG
Fantastic ‘lane that!
DSCN5899.JPG
And then through the shallow Ford.

Brett’s YouTube Video of this cracking ‘lane…
Oh, hang on, his video seems to stop?, but then…

Continues later on…?
DSCN5900.JPG
Entering the Clocaenog Forest 🙂
mapremoved
Nice long BOAT…
DSCN5902.JPG
Through some forest… And,…
DSCN5903.JPG
… through the gate and into the fields…
DSCN5904.JPG
Jalapeno behind me as Alan shuts the gate…
DSCN5905.JPG
Run Flossies, Run…!
DSCN5907.JPG
All the way in front of us to the gate… dumb animals! 😉
DSCN5908.JPG
… to keep the Flossies in!

Brett’s YouTube Video up to the gate…

And the rest of the ‘lane… 🙂
mapremoved
Then heading north to come back down south-west to Hafotty Bach on the map above
DSCN5910.JPG
Chasing baby pheasants!
DSCN5912.JPG
Up through the dark wooded ‘lane, NOT into the farmyard…
DSCN5915.JPG
Through the awkward three little gates…

Brett’s YouTube Video to this point.
DSCN5916.JPG
Good homemade signs if you’re heading in the other direction 😉
DSCN5917.JPG
Pick a gate Al’, any gate 😉
DSCN5918.JPG
Old Roller hiding in there somewhere… Shame!
DSCN5919.JPG
Is it me or is it getting gloomy? That threatened storm is on it’s way?…

Brett’s YouTube Video of the rest of the ‘lane…
DSCN5920.JPG
Yup, here goes the rain!…

Brett’s YouTube Video of the first half of…
DSCN5921.JPG
Bryn Ocyn BOAT, graded a while ago, it used to be a three foot water trough about here…
mapremoved
Here we are on the map 😉

The rest of the ‘lane… Whoops, including some banter at the end! Didn’t know Brett was recording then? 😦
That was the end of the route, but it was still early, so we decided to do some more ‘lanes on the way back –
DSCN5923.JPG
Alan getting wet opening the gate…
DSCN5925.JPG
Across the fields and into the woods beyond…
DSCN5926.JPG
Another gate sorry Al’ 😦
DSCN5927.JPG
DSCN5928.JPG
Hmmm, a bit more overgrown than usual?!
DSCN5929.JPG
Where’s the ‘lane Al’?!
We then went over a road to another ‘lane, but I didn’t take any photos as I was too busy trying to spot and stay on the next ‘lane… Luckily…

Brett was recording 😉
Next!…
mapremoved
A gentle BOAT to finish?
DSCN5932.JPG
DSCN5933.JPG
And out the gate at the top…

Brett’s YouTube Video of it 😉

Brett’s closing remarks…

Home to St. Asaph and the heavens opened!!!
A fantastic “Wednesday Wander”, lots of new ‘lanes, ticking more off my Landranger 116 Map! 😉

Lakes Weekend #1 – Scenic Group

Day One – Saturday 01/07/17

“Our little group” have had a weekend in the Lake District for the last few years, and starting last year we split into two groups, one the “scenic” group and the other the “tight and scratchy” group, which I went with last year… Luckily, this year, the two groups trips were on different weekends, so I can go on both!routesat.jpgThe route for the Saturday then… the plan was to meet up at “Phil’s LayBy” just off junction 36 of the M6, indicated with the red arrow. And then we’d travel west to begin the route. (The blue arrow was where Gary and Colin were staying in a B&B, and the black arrow was Alan and I’s Days Inn motel)DSCN5550.jpgAfter a couple of hours travelling and chatting, Alan & I arrived at J36 just before 10am as planned…DSCN5551.jpgAnd met Richard “Riccy” off the BigJimny board and his mate and passenger for the day Joel… We admired and discussed his Jimny for 5 minutes, before…DSCN5552.jpgGary and Colin arrived…
So we all had a good introductory natter before turning round and heading west to start the route…
DSCN5556.jpg
First ‘lane of the day then… Starting off gently, which is the norm’…
DSCN5559.jpg“Public Way to Foxfield”
DSCN5560.jpg
Off the tarmac 😉
DSCN5561.jpg
DSCN5562.jpg
A few gates along the way…
Gary leading, then Riccy and Joel, then Colin, then Alan & I bringing up the rear and shutting the gates…

Riccy’s YouTube Video of the first part of this ‘lane…

And then up to the point where we stopped for the photos belowDSCN5565.jpgStopped for a photo ‘op… all the Jimnys lined up 😉 DSCN5567.jpg
From the other side… nice view!
DSCN5569.jpg
On we go…

Riccy’s video of the last part of it.
A good ‘lane to start the day…
Next!
DSCN5571.jpg
High Nibthwaite, to start the climb up the side of Coniston Water towards Low Parkamoor…
mapremoved
Here on the iPad GPS / Memory Map
DSCN5573.jpg
A third of the way up we have to pull over as a KANKKU Land Rover was coming down (they are a company who charge people to go greenlaning in the area)
DSCN5576.jpg
On we go…

Here’s my video of the highlights of the climb up.
(We kept stopping for Colin to place his GoPro on a tripod to record us climbing up, I’ll add his video when it’s published on YouTube)
DSCN5583.jpg
Gathered at the top enjoying the views –

DSCN5600.jpg
Nice views to our right…
DSCN5601.jpg
Stopping for a look at where a good friend of ours rolled his Jimny a few years back… 😦
DSCN5602.jpg
Lined up at the end of the ‘lane.

Next ‘lane – “Grizedale”
DSCN5605.jpg

Here’s my YouTube Video of the initial climb up…

And Riccy’s too!
Carrying on…

Through a water trough as the mountain-bikers watch us…

Riccy’s video of the first bit of the drop back down up to where…
DSCN5608.jpg
… as this is the Scenic easy-going trip, we then pulled over for a cuppa and a bacon butty!
DSCN5609.jpg
And then, Mick Clayton! came passing by with his group, and stop for a handshake and a quick natter… Good to see you Mick! 😉
DSCN5614.jpg
Nice break, and off we go again…

Riccy’s video of the rest of the descent…
And then, onto the next ‘lane –

DSCN5633.jpg
Nice one of Colin dropping down a big step 🙂
DSCN5638.jpg
Looking back at the bedrock we’ve just come over… and,
DSCN5636.jpg
Looking right to UCR5003 “Stang End”… Good job we’re not going down it today, as there’s some kind of offroad marathon taking place…
DSCN5639.jpgFollowing them to the little bridge at the end of the ‘lane…
mapremoved
Day One, Saturday, over then… we left the others – Colin and Gary in their B&B in Kendal, and Riccy and Joel home north for the night, and made our way to our stay for the night at the Days Inn motel in the M6 south services at Killington (Lake) Reservoir. We booked in, asked the nice lady on reception if we could sneak out of the service road north up to the A road rather than having to go all the way south down to the next Motorway exit, and then we showered and freshened up before heading into Kendal to meet Gary and Colin for a Chinese and a few beers – don’t worry! Alan drove me safely back to the motel as he’s teetotal!

Day Two – Sunday 02/07/17

A good night’s sleep and we were up for breakfast and out again…
DSCN5643.jpg
Awful view from my room’s window 😉
DSCN5645.jpg
NO ENTRY – Except Authorised Vehicles” – it’s ok, we’ve had permission 😉
routesun.jpg
Sunday’s route then… Again the black arrow was our motel, the blue arrow where Gary and Colin were staying, and the red arrow was were we met Riccy and Joel, a little hamlet called Kentmere to begin day two’s route…
mapremoved
Stile End and then Sadgill…
DSCN5647.jpg
Warning…
DSCN5648.jpg
Big Black Boss Bovine blocks the proceedings!
DSCN5649.jpg
Cute Carves to our right though! 😉
DSCN5650.jpg
On we go…
DSCN5651.jpg
Pausing for some group photos…
DSCN5652.jpg
DSCN5654.jpg
On we go…
DSCN5657.jpg
Down the Z-bends the sign warned of 😉

Riccy’s video of this bit…
DSCN5659.jpg
Whoops! Colin bumps Gary up the rear and cracks his bumper! “Hammond!” LOL

Riccy’s video of the bump and the aftermath!
DSCN5660.jpg
Pulled over for a group of Landys going the other way… they must have had fun getting up those Z-bends?!
mapremoved
Up and back down Sadgill then?
But Gary’s feeling queezy with a belly full of fried food (on top of beer!) so elects to have a rest at the bottom, so I’m delegated to leader…
DSCN5666.jpg
Nice view to my right looking back down…
DSCN5667.jpg
Colin behind 😉
DSCN5668.jpg
Walker and Waterfall.
DSCN5669.jpg
At the first gate watching Riccy and Joel coming up…
DSCN5670.jpg
Lovely little bridge after the gate…
DSCN5671.jpg
Not sure if you can make them out on the horizon, but a lucky group of Landys must have got a pass to come down… read on…
DSCN5672.jpg
At the locked gate… you need a combination to come through – downwards only for 4x4s – after getting a pass from the council…
Down we go then… about turn!
DSCN5673.jpgNice view of the waterfall from my window on the way down…
DSCN5674.jpg
Nice “arm out of the window” photo catching the others behind…

DSCN5680.jpg
Breasthigh Road next then! 🙂
DSCN5681.jpg
Just off the blind bend…
DSCN5682.jpg
Awesome!
DSCN5683.jpg
Barrowdale Ford to get onto the ‘lane…
DSCN5684.jpgAgain, Gary waited at the bottom for us, so I lead again…
DSCN5685.jpg
Riccy coming up behind…
DSCN5686.jpg
Lined up beyond the gate…
DSCN5687.jpg
Long crunchy climb up…
DSCN5688.jpg
Looking back at the guys behind, and the A6 in the distance…
DSCN5689.jpg
Gary’s down there somewhere? Sat in his chair enjoying the views in the sun…
DSCN5691.jpg
Over the top…
DSCN5694.jpg
And down the other side…
DSCN5695
I stopped before the storm drain with it’s raised kerb edging on the top, and let the others decide if they wanted to go over it or not…

So I did it on my own in the end… better safe than sorry!
DSCN5697.jpg
Riccy’s awesome Jimny nicely parked on a rock waiting behind…
Then with the other two turned round, back over we go…
DSCN5698.jpg
DSCN5701.jpg
Back up the steps…
DSCN5702.jpg
DSCN5704.jpg
And down the other side again…
DSCN5705.jpg
Back down to find Gary…

Riccy’s video of us coming back up and over the top.
DSCN5707.jpg
And onto the last ‘lane of the day…
DSCN5708.jpg
But Gary notices one of my rear shocks swinging freely… a bolt has snapped… so out come the tools!
DSCN5709.jpg
And it’s soon back where it should be…
DSCN5710.jpg
And we’re soon off again…
DSCN5712.jpg
mapremoved
Down the BOAT and then west across the yellow C-road to rejoin the A6…
DSCN5714.jpg
Lined up for the last chat of the day, a shake of hands, and we’re all off our separate ways…
DSCN5715.jpg
Just gone three and heading home for a reasonable 5:30pm with a fuel stop, still time to have late Sunday Lunch with the family…
An awesome weekend! Thanks to everyone! Especially Gary for plotting and leading 😉

Here’s Colin’s amazingly edited highlights of the whole weekend –

Awesome that Colin! 😉
