T&S Group’s Lakes Weekend – Saturday 29/07/17

Overview
T&S ? “Tight & Scratchy“! This year “our little group” had split into two smaller groups for the annual Lake District weekend trips. Alan and I had already joined the other group for their trip at the beginning of July, and were now back to join the T&S group πŸ˜‰

Our route over the two days –
routeboth.jpg
would see us start near the traditional “Phil’s Layby” just off junction 36 of the M6, and snake our way up to Talkin, a little hamlet east of Carlisle where we were booked into a pub with rooms for the night. day two would see us snake back down again and end up where we started at junction 36 on the M6 again…

Day One – Saturday 29th July 2017
So, day one then, the route –
routeday1.jpgSo here we go then! πŸ˜‰

As Brett said on his introductory YouTube video above, we’d arranged to meet at 10:00am at the Texaco garage in Crooklands, Milnthorpe, LA7 7NX –

As is customary – from left to right – Riccy and Joel, Gary (Flanagan, not Wrench), Alan and I, Brett, so we started with the usual chat and admiring of each other’s vehicles! πŸ˜‰
DSCN5971.jpg
Ready for the off?!

Brett’s second introductory YouTube video as we head to the first ‘lane of the day – Lupton Ford.
DSCN5974.jpg
Lined up and on our way, we’re bringing up the rear as usual, checking the route, and liaising with Brett over the CB as to whether to shut the gates behind us or not, depending on how he found them in the lead…

Brett first through the ford… you can see him get out and “touch the wheels for luck”, LOL, no, he’s turning his free wheel hubs off πŸ˜‰
He then films the rest of us coming through behind –

Lane two then? –

“Dove House Farm” down this year, so turning off the A65 with us warning the vehicles behind us with hazard lights on as the others pull in… Luckily the landowner’s car isn’t blocking the end of the ‘lane! πŸ˜‰
Some stills from my camera too –

DSCN5976.jpg
DSCN5977.jpg
DSCN5978.jpg
And out and over their garden!!!
Onto Lane three then –

“Park Side”, Milnthorpe, as Brett says, behind the Booth’s Supermarket and Travis Perkins builder’s merchants!
Again, some stills from my camera behind Gary –

And out the other end…
DSCN5983.jpg
On tarmac for a bit, passing Milnthorpe Sands.
Turning inland again…

And onto lane four, Hazelslack – sticking the passengers into the bushes! Screach!!!
DSCN5984.jpg
My one photo from this ‘lane…

Lane five “Hale” – very tight passed the pointy wall two minutes in to the video!

Lane six “Eversley” downhill again this year.
Out at the bottom and carefully cross the A6.

Lane seven “Row”

Lane eight “Crossthwaite”

Lane nine “Town Yeat” down… Mental ‘lane that one!
Some stills from my camera –
DSCN5995.jpg
Gary disappearing in front of us (Riccy and Joel – wisely! – decided to sit this one out)
DSCN5996.jpg
DSCN5997.jpg

Lane ten “Town Yeat” back up again… even more mental?! LOL

Lane eleven “Underbarrow”
DSCN6000.jpg
A photo of it from my camera (Scarily number 6000! I take far too many photos!)

Lane twelve “Gamblesidemire” / Parkspring Wood, just to the west of Kendal…
DSCN6003.jpg
Bunched up after shutting a gate behind us…
DSCN6004.jpg
Catching up after another gate…
DSCN6005.jpg
And then gathered up at the end of the ‘lane have a very rare stop / chat / drink…

Lane thirteen! “Garth Row”
DSCN6006.jpg
As the sign says πŸ˜‰ “Public Way”
DSCN6008.jpg
Thwarted on the next planned road, so we ‘HAD’ to go back via Garth Row the opposite direction πŸ˜‰
DSCN6009.jpg
Nice weir(d) along the way…

Lane fourteen “Stile End”

Lane fifteen “Sadgill” – points to me and Gary for getting round without a shunt πŸ˜‰
The video ends just where Colin shunted (the other) Gary up the rear bumper on our previous trip… πŸ˜‰
DSCN6012.jpg
Looking down on the Z-bends, where Gary and I got round without shunting…? What, sorry, have I mentioned that already? πŸ˜‰

To the end of the ‘lane, where I took this photo –
DSCN6013.jpg
Of the nice (CNC?) carved sign pointing back from whence we came…
We then skipped Gatescarth due to time constraints… 😦
Lane sixteen (and seventeen really as it’s two ‘lanes) Otter Bank and Bouthwaite

DSCN6014.jpg
DSCN6015.jpg
This is the one that pops out in the school playground?! Or, as the sign originally said “playgroud”, but they’ve fixed it now, as you can hear us discuss on the video…
Straight after that, onto another ByWay –

Lane Seventeen “Steel Croft”.

Lane Nineteen “Mart Close” (which was the last ‘lane of our previous trip coming the other way, down)
DSCN6019.jpg
Where I replaced my shock-bolt at the top after driving the next ‘lane…
DSCN6020.jpg
“Breast High Road” – you can see it snaking up in-front of us…

Lane nineteen first though – “Borrowdale Ford”, all of us trying to soak Brett πŸ˜‰
I was a bit behind (in the video) as we were talking to the two guys in the Land Rover who had just come over the other way…
DSCN6021.jpg
Riccy and Joel had driven this on our previous trip, and elected to stay at the ford and have a chat with the Landy guys as the rest of us went up and over…

Lane twenty then, and Brett starts his video after the first gate halfway up…
Down to the gate halfway down the other side…

Continuing after the gate…
Down and over the storm drain towards the bottom, taking the hardest route and “field testing the rock sliders” – Brett’s just had a set of JimnyBits’ bolt-on rock sliders πŸ™‚

Gary and I coming down behind Brett…

Brett coming back up, filmed by Gary…

And then Gary and I coming up… Gary getting the chicken clucks for coming up the rock slope in the middle, and knowing that would be waiting for me too, I elected to crawl over the high side too πŸ˜‰ Made it look easy too πŸ™‚

And then back up to the top, where a motorcyclist had broken down.
DSCN6029.jpg
And then down the other side to meet back up with Riccy and Joel…
DSCN6030.jpg
Our convoy of Jimnys heading up the A6 for a bit…

Lane 24 then? “Rosgill to Sweetholme”

Lane 25, “New Biggin”, Alan demonstrating his herding abilities! πŸ˜‰
DSCN6037.jpg
I climbed up for a panoramic view!
DSCN6038.jpg
Nice one of Gary and his awesome (Rockwatt prepared) Jimny behind us…
And then, we’re on to…

“Bumpy lane” – we’re sure the farmer as ploughed this field in this fashion to put people off driving it?! But we relish it all the more πŸ˜‰

Ricky and then Gary…

And then Alan and I… LOL

Carrying on…!
DSCN6044.jpg
The young “teenage” cows push forward to see what the mad humans are doing?! Reverse Zoo Psychology ?!

As you can see in Brett’s YouTube Video, taking us to the end of this series of ‘lanes…
Next? “Borran’s Hill Ford”, Lane 28 of the day!
DSCN6046.jpg
Down the railway sleeper, and through the river…
As you can see in this series of videos –

And finally, Brett coming back over…
Next!

Raughton Head Hill 1

And 2…

Gaitgill becomes the last, #30, on our way to…
DSCN6056.jpg
Talkin, where we’re stopping the night at The Blacksmiths Arms –
blacksmiths1.jpg
The Jimnys parked at the back πŸ™‚
blacksmiths2.jpg
My room was in the granny annex just behind my Jimny… Alan and Brett were upstairs over the bar πŸ˜‰
blacksmiths3.jpg
We had a fine evening meal, joined by Riccy and his mate Paul, and Phil T made a guest appearance too! πŸ˜‰ Good to meet you Paul! And nice to see Phil T too, he was due to come along, but his Jimny failed it’s MOT just before the weekend…
So, that was Day One, Saturday the 29th of July, some 31 ‘lanes in one day!
I’ve split the blog in two as it’s so big, so Sunday is in a separate one…
