Shropshire 28/01/18

Sunday the 28th of January, and a few of us had arranged to meet up for a days greenlaning in Shropshire –
route.jpg
Brett had plotted the route (as per usual!) and we’d arranged to meet up at the McDonalds in Shrewsbury, for breakfast at 8am –
DSCN7074.jpg
Ummm, as it happened, in the end, there was just me & Brett in attendance 😦
Brett had no-one with him for the day, and I was missing my co-pilot Alan as he’d been rather ill of late, and wasn’t up to the day. Riccy and Joel were scheduled to come down from Cumbria and had booked a Travelodge locally, but they were beset with mechanical problems at the eleventh hour… So just two Jimnys and two Drivers, “Billy-no-mates” πŸ˜‰
As you can hear on…

…Brett’s now customary introductory video πŸ™‚
And then, just a quick trip south from Shrewsbury to the start of the day’s route at Leasowes Bank Farm just south-west of Pulverbatch –
DSCN7090.jpg
Here on my iPad MemoryMap GPS screen.
DSCN7091.jpg
Here’s the start of it…

And here’s the rest in Brett’s Video… You can hear us arrange to do relay-gates, he opens one for me to drive through, then I open the next one, etc…

On we go to the end of the second lane…
DSCN7092.jpg
A short drop south to the next ‘lane “Gatten”
DSCN7093.jpg
Through the farmyard (Slowly!) then we’re faced with this great climb up…
DSCN7094.jpg
A standing start with the gate shut behind me, so airlocker on, and up we crawl…
DSCN7095.jpg
Awesome!…
DSCN7096.jpg
And then catching up with Brett (above the first fence post!) πŸ˜‰

Brett’s Video of this great ‘lane… πŸ™‚
DSCN7098.jpg
A quick trip north-east and then we’re heading south-east on the map above from our crosshair position…
DSCN7101.jpg
Just one nice photo of Brett’s Jimny infront of a small lake here, and the rest is…

… on his video above.
DSCN7102.jpg
Next, north by my finger.
DSCN7103.jpg
Small ford…
DSCN7104.jpgThen a nice climb up…
DSCN7105.jpg
To the horizon…

… as on Brett’s Video of the first half of this ‘lane.

And the second half, where you can see me…
DSCN7106.jpg
… pulled over after opening the gate for Brett.
DSCN7107.jpg
Next heading south New House to Adstone Hill
DSCN7108.jpg
Spectacular view to our right, although the camera doesn’t do it justice…

You can see in the middle of the ‘lane we meet a small fallen tree… We could have driven around the left of it, but chose to tidy it up, for ourselves, and other route users πŸ˜‰
DSCN7110.jpgBefore…
DSCN7111.jpg
After… Buzz (the cordless chainsaw) and I had trimmed it, and Brett had stacked the offcuts on the other side of the ‘lane…
DSCN7112.jpg
And on we trundle…

… to the double gates at the end.
DSCN7114.jpg
Next, Adstone to Medlicott
DSCN7113.jpg
Down from the farm at the top…
DSCN7115.jpg

DSCN7116.jpg
Through a small ford…
DSCN7117.jpg
And then up a scratchy ‘lane…

Brett’s Video of it…
DSCN7118.jpg
The north-west and onto the ‘lane from Coates heading east…
DSCN7120.jpg
Nice view to my right (behind the big pile of manure!) LOL

Brett’s Video, up to…
DSCN7121.jpg
…another Long Mynd sign.
DSCN7122.jpg
Lost Brett after pausing to shut the gate.

Onwards and eventually back to the tarmac…
DSCN7123.jpg
Quick trip on the tarmac south-west and then onto “Stanbach”
DSCN7124.jpg
Down off the moors…
DSCN7125.jpg
Pausing to capture Brett in the distance…

Brett’s Video of this nice little ‘lane
(Excuse the ‘lame pun on the video!)
DSCN7126.jpg
Next ‘lane, under the ridge where the paragliders fly above, mad-men, like my brother!
DSCN7127.jpg
The start…

Brett’s Video of the ‘lane πŸ™‚
On we go…

Until…
DSCN7128.jpg
Another tree down, you can see the nice new break on the trunk.
DSCN7129.jpg
Out comes Buzz again, and we tidy everything once again…
Some crossers go round as we’re doing it, and some ramblers THANK US (!) for clearing the way πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Rest of the ‘lane…
DSCN7130.jpg
A bit of tarmac later, and we’re just leaving Clunton heading west and I noticed a BOAT (ByWay Open to All Traffic) in Sowdley Wood below us on the B4368, so we turned round and went for a look…
DSCN7131.jpg
Looked promising!
DSCN7132.jpg
DSCN7133.jpg
DSCN7134.jpg

Brett’s Video of the first half…
DSCN7135.jpg

A nice little ‘lane / find… nothing that taxing, but on our route and better driving that than tarmac πŸ˜‰

Clunton Ford… just a foot deep, surprising given the rain we’d had recently…
DSCN7136.jpg
West through Clun. and then onto –
DSCN7137.jpg
Whitcott Keysett BOAT east towards Bicton
DSCN7138.jpg
BYWAY sign… nice signage here in Shropshire.
DSCN7139.jpgOooh, this looks nice!
DSCN7140.jpg
What a daft place to put (another!) gate though?!
DSCN7142.jpg
Another gate in the middle, where…

Brett’s video ends…
DSCN7143.jpg
Through the gate and there’s a big hump, where Brett shouts over the CB (in his next video below) that S200KYS is flexing well, so I climbed back out for the above photo πŸ˜‰

On we go…
Cracking ‘lane that!

Through Bicton Ford at the end of the ‘lane…

Then Brett…
DSCN7145.jpg
DSCN7146.jpg
Nice bow wave πŸ™‚
Next ‘lane…
DSCN7147.jpg
Acton to Brockton… is a bugger to find, as you can see on…

Brett’s Video, and through another ford at the end…
DSCN7151.jpg
Next!
DSCN7152.jpg
“Lower Down” BOAT heading north
DSCN7155.jpg
DSCN7156.jpg
Another couple of fords along this one…

Here’s Brett’s Video of the full ‘lane.
Next! Another great ford! –
DSCN7157.jpg
DSCN7158.jpg
DSCN7159.jpg
Again…

Here’s the whole ‘lane on Brett’s Video πŸ™‚
Next? Yup, another great ford…
DSCN7161.jpg
At Cheney Longville…
DSCN7162.jpg
PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY πŸ™‚
DSCN7163.jpg
Old railway bridge embankments
DSCN7164.jpg
Leaning over
DSCN7165.jpg
Squeeze!
DSCN7166.jpg
And through the ford proper, with a steep climb up the other bank…

As you can see on Brett’s Video πŸ˜‰
Next… a personal favourite!
DSCN7168.jpg
Up from Church Stretton…
DSCN7167.jpg
My favourite blue sign πŸ˜‰
Fist bit…
DSCN7169.jpg
… is a nice little ‘lane
DSCN7170.jpg
… that pops out into a residential estate?!

Brett’s Video of it… and then we struggle to find the second bit, and he kindly waits for me… πŸ˜‰
DSCN7171.jpg
Here it is… over the kerb?!…

DSCN7172.jpg
And onto an old favourite…
DSCN7173.jpg
DSCN7174.jpg
DSCN7177.jpg
Funny place to leave a strop? LOL

Anyway, the video gives you a better idea of this awesome ‘lane!
DSCN7179.jpg
And then up the rest… inquisitive sheeps come for a look…

Brett’s Video of the middle bit, up to another gate, where we relay again.

And the last bit of it…
DSCN7180.jpg
Pulled over for a group on a charity bike ride…

And then through a really deep ford at the end of the road… LOL
DSCN7181.jpg
Next… a BOAT around Soudley

Odd having a ‘lane running right passed the back of your house? Four in all, as on the map above…
DSCN7187.jpg
Next, a BOAT running west below Middlehope / towards Harton Wood.
DSCN7189.jpg
BYWAY!

Brett’s Video of it…
…Where, Ummm, you can hear him mention I’d just rear-ended him 😦 I slammed on, but yes, rammed him up the rear… sounds like I might owe him a new Hi-Lift jack 😦 Whoops!
DSCN7191.jpg
Larkfield Farm to Milford Lodge north-west of Diddlebury…

Brett’s Video of it… (I must have got tired of taking photos?)
DSCN7193.jpg
Little ford along the way…
DSCN7195.jpg
Clee St. Margaret Ford…
DSCN7196.jpg
More like a flooded road?
And then onto Peckledy…
DSCN7197.jpg
Again, one of my favourites…
DSCN7198.jpg
Down we go…
DSCN7199
Ummm, down all the ruts and steps?!… Errr…
DSCN7200.jpg
Drop into the splash pool?!… Ummm…
DSCN7201.jpg
Along the rocky river bed with it’s foot high step?!…
NOPE… Graded! Ruined 😦

Brett’s Video of it… 😦
DSCN7202.jpgI still stuck a fiver in the collection jar on the gatepost though, it’ll make up for all the times I won’t come back now it’s been ruined… 😦
DSCN7203.jpg
Ah well, onto the next one… BOAT north-east out of Beambridge… The sun was shining πŸ™‚
DSCN7204.jpg
Brett swings in…
DSCN7206.jpg
Another nice ford in the middle…

Brett’s Video of it…
At one with nature? He mentions Blue Tits and Snow Drops in this video…
DSCN7208.jpg
Bush Farm BOAT below Shipton

Brett’s Video of it.
DSCN7212.jpg
Next, a ‘lane above Bourton

Brett’s Video of the first half of it…

And the second half… (After a Pits Stop)
You can hear Brett mention a nice Pheasant carving made out of a tree –
DSCN7215.jpg
So I zoomed in at it over the gate…
The we’re onto the second ‘lane on the map above, past the mast…
DSCN7216.jpg
There’s that blue sign again πŸ˜‰
DSCN7218.jpg
“Past the Mast”

A reference to Brett’s comment on his video above πŸ˜‰
DSCN7220.jpg
Last ‘lane of the day then… Up north from Buildwas…

DSCN7223.jpg
At the top…
Free wheel hubs off, and ready for home…

Brett’s Closing Comments, says it all πŸ˜‰
Hopefully we’ll be joined by some of our mates next time, and we won’t have to go as Billy and Billy (no-mates!) πŸ˜‰

  1. Another GREAT DAY 4×4’ing with my good ex-friend Dave “BUMP-ME from behind” JONES …

Next trip out is Sunday 25th February – I’m hoping for Staffordshire, but it seems that this county is short on Byways and UCRs … so it might have to be North Hereford and South Shropshire (we will have to see).
